Deckel FP1 twin lever saddle lubrication

Hello everyone,

I am just starting a full rebuild of an Alexander Master Toolmaker / Deckel FP1. It is one of the final versions of the Alexander fitted with roller bearings to both the horizontal spindle and vertical head as per the attached sales literature. The machine is of the original Mark 1 version with feeds via pick-off gears. However, the machine is a rebuild of an earlier Deckel PF1. The main body casting is stamped with the interlaced FD symbol and FP1-44-23843 as per the attached photo. I assume that the 44 relates to 1944 as the manufacturing date of the original machine.

Having removed the saddle I notice that the oil cavity and wick lubrication arrangements do not provide any lubrication to the Z-Axis and I am considering adding passages to provide lubrication of the Z-Axis slides.

I am aware that the later twin dial FP1’s provided lubrication of the Z-Axis slides, but had a more complex lubrication arrangement including an internal tube and that a sight glass was for confirming flow rather than oil level.

However, according to the manuals that I have access to, the twin lever FP1’s shared the same oil cavity and wick lubrication arrangements as the earlier FP1’s. Does anyone know if they included passages to provide lubrication for the Z-Axis slides, please?

Thanks,

John
