Hi. My machine is a 1960's FP2 which suddenly developed a noise from the gearbox area after I had let the 'Y' axis hit its stop and break the shear pin. I replaced the shear pin and all the feeds work fine. At lower speeds, the machine is fine but at higher speeds (800+) after a short while, there was a bit of a screeching sound like a siezing bearing so i stopped the machine immediately. The spindles seemed to be free so i started the machine from lowest speed and ran at all of the lower speeds without issue spending several minutes at each. After engaging the higher speed range, the noise appeared soon at 800rpm. I removed the vertical spindle head to eliminate that but the problem still exists. It sounds in the upper half of the machine so i suspect a gearbox bearing or bush. All oil levels are correct to the sightglasses. Anyone had a similar issue or got any ideas? How difficult is it to access the gearbox? I have Alan's CD but can only find pictures of the gearbox.
