I have an older lever style FP-1. I bought at auction years ago, it's time to get it out of storage and put to work. I've been stripping many ugly coats of paint, trying to get down to the red primer, will paint in the appropriate RAL 7045 mausgray.
I saw some pictures of FP-1 mills being rebuilt at Singer. The rear wrap around casting will not come off for stripping, though Singer seems to be able to do it. I have removed all cap screws, tapped with a hammer, but no go. I also have a small slit in the rear casting. I have jammed a putty knife in the crack. It is quite small, but goes all the way to the bottom. Is this normal, or will I have to weld it when I get it off. Any ideas?
