Hello & Schaublin 13 Question(s)

Greets all. Long time listener, first time caller.

Recently picked up a Schaublin 13 to replace an old worn out Bridgeport;
this is my first go with the Schaublin and I must say, from the little I've
done with it so far, I'm impressed! Tough/stout little sucker this is.

I was surprised with the fact that it's got controls/knobs sticking out
every which way -- I thought I'd save a little space with this thing but
I don't think I'll be able to put it in a corner.

Anyway, the old S13 is cleaning up well. Better than I expected in fact.
I though it would be a major tear-down, clean-up/lube, and repaint, but so
far: knock-on-swiss-wood. Here it is without the (fixed) head and (fixed) table:

I can move each axis to its full extents with a constant feel in the handles
so I think wear is very little. Little on the snug side but it might be
the gummed up oil all over the thing.

Also tried a very aggressive climb cut (8mm cutter, ~10mm deep, in some tough
steel) -- end mill came out the other side in one piece and chatter-free cut.

When I bought it the power feeds were hit/miss, UP (Z?) didn't work at all,
but turned out it was chips in the joystick/stick shift. Now they're
smooth as a baby's bum.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing: the rapids don't work. Before I decapitate
myself trying to get this thing off the ground and climbing under it, thought
it might be wise to ask -- is there a common problem that cause these to not
work? Something in particular I might look for, instead of spending a few
hours with a flashlight in my mouth playing Sherlock Holmes?

If you made it this for, thanks for reading!
-Tony

PS: S/N is 268,000-ish -- any guesses on what year it might be?
