Report on Abene Rebuild

Here are a few pics showing my progress on the Abene VHF 3. All the cast iron was taken back to bare metal and now comes the fun of making the surface smooth for the new paint. As you can see on the base I'm using body filler and a 2 part high build primer to fill in the low spots. My guess is that it will take at least 3 or 4 more coats to make it look right. On the knee and ram I tried using some stuff called Slick Sand. It is touted as being like a liquid putty that fills in the imperfections underneath better than a high build primer. I found it hard to spray and not easy to sand once it dries. So I'm going back to the primer after I sand off most of the Slick Sand. The top color coat will be a single stage 2 part urethane that I've found to be impervious to oil and grime once it cures. Click image for larger version.
