I need to cut external threads on the exhaust port of a BMW motorcycle head. The ports are being tig welded to build back the stripped portions of the threads. So my question is, how can I best do this on the fp2NC with D2? I don't think I can use a thread mill, since there is no programmatic way to generate a helix in D2. Perhaps I could use D2 tapping mode, (e.g. using a thread profile cutter in a boring head). However, how would you return to the same spot to start the cut, it would require leaving the gears engaged or somehow figuring out a way to re-engage the gears so that it is in the same helix each time.
Maybe I need to expand my tooling options. Is there such a thing as a high speed head with an offsetting capability, so that I could use a thread mill in it and set the pitch using the D2 tapping mode?
Probably a die is the best option, but I'm trying to keep an open mind and see if there is a better solution.
