Just curious what typical price might be for the 54 model in particular. Apparently made from about mid 1990's on....although image below is much newer 54 judging from control.

Did clones improve on anything?

This is probably limited to the FP-1, however when clones like the British Alexander machines were designed and built as copies of Deckel machines, did they improve on anything? Are there Alexander attachments that are worth looking for that fit up to the Deckel?

FP3NC ram cover?

My mill is missing this cover. From some photos and the manual it looks like this is made like a plastic tambour. Is this material available to cut / make your own? It seems like it might be good for other applications. Is there a cover for under the ram in front when using the mill in horizontal mode with the vertical head out of the way? Can someone supply photos and measurements of both?
Thanks

PM EMO trip - September 2013

The purpose of this thread is to see if/how we can arrange a trip to the EMO in Hannover in september 2013.
There seem to be interest in that idea initially launched by Martin and I, for myself, would be extremely glad to meet PM members I've been reading for years.

So the idea is to allow the potential participants to declare themselves, collect their ideas or suggestions, and to summarize all the infos here.

I think we have to set a starting point, and determine the "can't miss" places to visit and try to see where it brings us. Geographically, that is.
Then it should be possible to set a schedule and to build up additionnal visits/acitivities around that frame.

The EMO will take place between the 15th and 21st of september 2013 in Hannover.

Homepage - EMO Hannover

Martin said he'd be able to have Singer, FPS 1 and 2, at least 1 DMG location doors opened for us.
Kunzmann seemed do-able at the time.
Aircraft places, both fixed wing and rotary civilian and military were also mentionned.

I would be very interested in paying Rüdiger Krämer of Ruemema a visit, to see top notch Schaublin 135-150 rebuildings

It already seems like quite a program to me ! Let us know your wishes.

Hi.

My FP2NC won't to start, it reports Error 38. Should be a software error on the NCC90 card. Did the EEPROM erase itself, or could it be something else?

Any ideas?

Torleif.

I've done some fairly heavy milling using the deckel rotary table without concern for the worm. Any idea if heavy milling with the indexer will damage the worm?

Other European Mills

Hi Guys,
I was wondering about those other European milling machines. What machine specific forum do these horizontal/vertical knee mills belong in? Here are some that have been for sale by dealers and privately through Junkmail or Gumtree in Sunny South Africa.
For instance:
1. This nicely porche painted Heckert
2. Grossly over priced but very neato, I think, Simplon with Imperial lead screws
3. Dunno where it comes from, but the QC is supposed to be good of this Ajax-Cleveland, with 2 axis DRO
4. And you thought they only made shapers. I dig the big old ammeter staring you in the clock of this fugly machine. What’s with the table, can you get more than a few degrees out of it, would it be worth the mission to centre it? A decent paint job could make this Varnamo very respectable

Have some questions on an FP1

Went to see one last week. Serial # 36217. Looked old. If you didn't mind rust on the column ways and on a bunch of the unpainted unplated parts ( superficial, but rust ) and .030 backlash on the X axis screw, at first glance it looked like it might not be in bad shape. The original paint was quite good. The seller had replaced the original motor with a single speed 3hp running it with a vfd. Here are the main points of concern. Gear clatter as the spindle slows to a stop. Sounds pretty good when it's going but when you are waiting for it to stop it clatters. Tried it in a bunch of speeds, always the same clatter. Is this to be expected with the old machine. The other thing that made me cringe was we put it in top speed let it go for a half a minute or so ran the quill down an inch and a bit then went to lock it there with the quill clamp and the machine stopped. No smoke no grinding gears or screeching belts.Tried it again same thing happened right when we went to lock the quill in place. Started right up again no problem. Does this sound like a vfd issue? Put it in a slower speed 750 or so, left the quill retracted and snugged up on the quill clamp ( not too hard just firm ) causing a slight sound change as if the spindle was under load or that the clamping had deflected the quill causing a change in the way the gears in the head were engaging. Any thoughts or comments would be great. It was my first encounter with a Deckel . Can anyone put a date to it. Thanks for any insight. Ted

Report on Abene Rebuild

Here are a few pics showing my progress on the Abene VHF 3. All the cast iron was taken back to bare metal and now comes the fun of making the surface smooth for the new paint. As you can see on the base I'm using body filler and a 2 part high build primer to fill in the low spots. My guess is that it will take at least 3 or 4 more coats to make it look right. On the knee and ram I tried using some stuff called Slick Sand. It is touted as being like a liquid putty that fills in the imperfections underneath better than a high build primer. I found it hard to spray and not easy to sand once it dries. So I'm going back to the primer after I sand off most of the Slick Sand. The top color coat will be a single stage 2 part urethane that I've found to be impervious to oil and grime once it cures. Click image for larger version.

we want to get a 5 axis machine, and my boss is really liking the deckel, it will be a used machine. they go fast, and we have seen a few pop up , but some have the Heidenhain, controls and some have the Seimens control....is there a big difference...is one geared for any special type of operation. Also is there a tool probe setter that is normally on these machines that is best.. i think i have seen 2 different ones I want to get as informed as possible, hoping someone here can shed some light, thanks

Reliability of FP1 Aktiv

A buddy in Switzerland is considering buying an FP1 Aktiv. I've heard that these can be big trouble if the electronics develops difficulties. Anyone have any experience with a) the reliability of these machines, and b) what happens if the active feature quits? Do the feeds become inoperable? Or do the electronic stops just quit working?

Thanks for any insight,
Joe

Maho MH600E Transformer Wiring

Hello Folks,

I am in the process of rewiring my MH600E and could really use some help with regard to the transformer cabinet. There weren't any electrical manuals with this machine and all the wires from the transformers have been pulled out of the electrical cabinet.

Would someone by chance have a schematic for the transformers? It is 1986 vintage.

Thanks a bunch,
Davey Boy.Click image for larger version.

Arboga U2508 impressions and experiences?

$

Hi guys,

I'm considering buying an Arboga U2508 mill/drill as a small second milling machine in my workshop and would like to hear some real life experiences with such a machine. It comes with the special Arboga collet chuck as well as table feed on the X axis. My second mill in the shop is a TOS FN22 (Deckel FP2 clone) with all available tooling (high speed head, adjustable table, fixed table, horizontal, etc..), so I'm fairly well covered for "larger" workpieces allready. The "problem" is that the bed on the TOS is occupied with my bicycle tubing mitering fixtures (I make custom bicycle frames), so I want to be able to easier to the odd jobb without removing the fixtures from the TOS. The main use for the Arboga will be milling/slotting/jig boring type of operations on smaller workpieces. I allready have an Arboga E100S with an X/Y table, so that takes care of my main drilling duties.

So, experiences would be good. Is it adequate for smaller jobs (making tooling etc) as a mill? Do any of you have pictures of work done on a similar machine?
